Woodson: Lin will start, Kidd will come off bench

Nothing too surprising here, but some were speculating about Kidd winning the starting job. Anyway, some good quotes from Woodson in this article.

Mike Woodson: Knicks will 'absolutely' match offer for Jeremy Lin

Jeremy Lin will be back with the Knicks and will go into training camp as their starting point guard.

Mike Woodson said Wednesday that the Knicks "absolutely" would match the four-year, $28.8 million offer sheet Lin will get from the Houston Rockets. Woodson also said Jason Kidd was brought in to not only help the Knicks win, but to mentor Lin and as of now will serve as his backup.

"Jeremy was our starter before he got hurt," Woodson said. "Unfortunately he went down with the [knee] injury. He's not going to be punished for that. He's got a lot of work to do this summer in terms of the development program we put in place."

"When he comes back to veteran's camp he'll have the first nod. He'll be our starter and Jason will back him up in terms of helping us develop this young man into a great point guard."

The NBA moratorium on transactions was lifted Wednesday and the Knicks announced three moves -- the re-signing of J.R. Smith, the acquisition of Marcus Camby in a sign-and-trade from Houston and the signing of James White.

Kidd and Steve Novak will be signed Thursday. It doesn't sound like the Knicks will wait too long after Lin gets his offer sheet to match the contract, which is guaranteed for $19.5 million the first three years with the fourth-year a team option. Woodson said the Knicks didn't blink when they learned about the terms.

"Never once," Woodson said. "Until that deal is done I'm not really allowed to talk about it. But Jeremy Lin has always been a big part of what we're trying to do as we move forward with our franchise."

The Knicks also will sign 35-year-old Argentine point guard Pablo Prigioni to a one-year deal, his American-based agent George Bass said. Prigioni, who has been playing in the Spanish League since 1999, will play for Argentina in the London Olympics.

Prigioni will add depth and be another player who can teach Lin the ins and outs of running a team. Despite Lin's impressive run last year -- he averaged 18.2 points and 7.7 assists in 25 starts -- he is still mostly unproven. Lin, 24 never started a game before last season. He also has yet to play in the postseason as rehab from knee surgery kept him out of the Knicks' first-round loss to Miami.

From the start of free agency, the Knicks were looking for an experienced point guard to help out Lin. They went hard after Steve Nash, but lost him to the Lakers. Kidd, 39, isn't a bad consolation prize for the Knicks, who are trying to win now and develop Lin into an everyday quality point guard.

"I thought he would be a perfect fit for Jeremy Lin in terms of being able to tutor him as he grows as point guard for our franchise," Woodson said. "Jason can still play and run a ballclub, so that's important as we move forward.

"The guy's a winner. He knows how to win and he gets the most out of guys around him. I think that's what's going to important for all the guys, the young guys, like Iman [Shumpert] and the young Jeremy Lin in terms of making guys around them better and winning at a high level."

captain obvious speaks... I love Woody, but does he even need to address this, especially now, some three months before the training camp AND before either player has been officially signed

What are you talking about? Doesn't matter when it happens, he will be back. I have no idea what some of you guys want from Lin. The doctors aren't clearing him to play, yet you guys bash him becasue he said he feels he is at 85%. D-Will isn't participating in scrimmages until today, because his contract wasn't signed, but Lin gets hammered for backing out of the USA select team - which was absolutely no surprise! Now you wanna bash him, because he hasn't signed an offer sheet yet? Shiiat, come to senses!

He will be our point guard of the future starting in the present, so could you guys please start to treat him like that and don't go crazy all the time? Worry about his turnovers and that's about as much critique as Lin deserves. But to solve that problem Grunwald has brought in two veteran guards to mentor him.

I didnt bash him, I don't even know half the shit you are talking about. All I know is his contact hasnt been signed. Whats the hold up. Only one team made an offer and we can beat it. Whats the hold up?

Maybe he's waiting for Novak to sign first...or maybe he is waiting until he goes back to New York to physically sign the offer

Guys, most of the times these things have cap reasons, because the timing of deals can have an effect of your ability to do certain things. Might be better for Houston to offer that sheet later, because they want to do something now without having that money tied up to Lin for up to three days. Might be better for the Knicks for trading purposes, because his qualifying offer is much lower (though in this case it would be good will needed by Lin or the Rockets).

Lin not having signed yet is nothing to worry about, so just relax! Nothing bad can happen to your Knicks.

Maybe he's waiting to see what happens with Landry?..

Stop it.. Its about Houston delaying it.. Not about Lin..

BTW: With Houston trying to get Howard, they might not even offer Lin the sheet anytime soon, instead using their cap room to offer the Magic cap relief in addition to picks. I wouldn't be surprised, though the latest articles say Lin's offer sheet will be made official today. Let's see how long this drags on.

spree, are we tied into the Rockets' plans though? I mean, do the Knicks and Lin have to wait for Houston make an offer?

Of course not. It's between the Rockets and Lin. But as long as he has no other offer sheet from another team and thinks he will definitely get that Rockets offer sheet, he has no incentive not to wait on them, if they indeed haven't given him that sheet yet (I'm speculating a bit, but think it's a reasonable thought with the Rockets creating cap room right now). Maybe another team has entered the picture or his agent thinks another one will, I don't know? As long as he hasn't signed anything all we can do is wait. But with him being restricted, it's nothing big to worry about. As long as he doesn't reject all offers besides the qualifying offer. In that case he would lose money this year, but would become an unrestricted free agent next summer. Too big a risk for him in my book though.

I wish I didn't have to cite the POS that is Marc Berman, but Lin signed the offer sheet with the Rockets. Now we'll match, and he'll officially be a Knick.

Marc Berman ‏@NYPost_Berman
NBA source says the vigil is over. Jeremy Lin has signed Rockets offer sheet in Vegas. Told part of delay was his ESPYs appearance.

my point was, if the Rockets were to keep Jeremy in a limbo (which apparently they are not), wouldn't he at some point feel compelled to just tell them to go fuck themselves and try to reach a deal with the Knicks?

If you consider Lin leaving bad, I stand corrected, because one thing could and did happen: A bigger offer sheet. But with us getting Felton instead, I still say "nothing bad can happen to your Knicks". ;)
