Camby is a perfect fit. We really need rebounding and toughness off the bench. Camby led the league in rebounds per 48 minutes last season, averaged 9 boards and 1.5 blocks in only 23 minutes a night, and only missed 7 out of 66 games due to injury. 20 minutes a night from Camby would help keep Tyson fresh going into the playoffs. Plus, last year, our defense really fell off whenever Tyson went to the bench. Camby would prevent that from happening.

i still think we need a guard more than we need a backup center. We're really going to start JR smith all season and Lin's going to play backup 2?

Huh? I thought Lin was the 1, JR the 2. When Shump gets back he starts @ 2. Kidd off the bench @ 1.

I figured its going to be:

Lin/Kidd
JR/Lin

Shump won't be back for a while. And not at 100% until we near the playoffs. This is a problem unless Lin's going to play 40 minutes a game, Toney Douglas is good again. James White is NOT a shooting guard

I think Kidd'll get some minutes at 2. We can sign some young guy to fill the guard spot if need be. Why do you think we need another backup guard? I'm just counting we have: 2 starters (Lin, JR/shump) and 1.5 bench guards (Kidd and JR when Shump comes back, also this doesn't include TD who can fill a slot as well) Meanwhile our interior defenders, our 4 &5, we only have two of them, and Amare isn't even contributing his share, meanwhile we have exactly zero backup centers or pfs, and ill just mention no backup interior guys, so what needs do we need to fill at guard that are more pressing than getting another guy, total of 2 on the whole team, that has talent and body for interior d and rebounding, not to mention how many years Camby's been in the league. I didn't include Jorts for the same reason as TD, not a solid option. Jeffries is a backup 4, but he's not an interior 4, he's a perimeter defender.

Hopefully we can trade Toney Douglas so the Cambyman can wear his "vintage 23" Knicks jersey again :)

Knicks are apparently in the lead.

Miami Heat president Pat Riley was able to get Ray Allen at a discount, convincing him to take half has much money as he was offered by the Boston Celtics.

If the Heat want to land their next free-agent target, veteran center Marcus Camby, Riley is going have to make the same sale or likely lose out to the New York Knicks.

Camby's current starting point for salary, sources said, is $3 million per season on a multiyear deal. The only way for the Heat to make that work is a sign-and-trade with the Houston Rockets, who own Camby's rights. The Rockets, however, are interested in a sign-and-trade with the Knicks but not with the Heat, sources told ESPN.com.

The Knicks, sources said, have had discussions with the Rockets about Camby and the Dallas Mavericks about a sign-and-trade for free agent Jason Kidd, who agreed to join the Knicks earlier this week. The Knicks are hoping to make a sign-and-trade deal for one of them and use their $3.09 mid-level exception to sign the other.

Camby was scheduled to meet with the Heat on Saturday and the Knicks on Sunday. If Riley cannot swing a sign-and-trade with Houston the best he can offer Camby is the veteran's minimum of about $1.4 million, less than half of what the Knicks could offer via a sign-and-trade or the mid-level.

Camby, who averaged 4.9 points and 9.0 rebounds in 59 games with the Portland Trail Blazers and Rockets last season, has other suitors including the San Antonio Spurs. The Knicks, however, have made him a priority.

The Heat are scheduled to host veteran power forward Rashard Lewis on Sunday, who was recently bought out by the New Orleans Hornets. With Allen set to take the Heat's mid-level exception when he signs after July 11, Lewis is facing the same option in Miami as Camby.

The best the Heat can offer is the $1.4 million veteran's minimum. Lewis is not eligible for a sign-and-trade.

I'm surprised by Camby's production at age 37. He was always so damn brittle in his first few years, and big guys who rely on their athleticism as much as he did usually fall off fast.

John Hollinger ‏@johnhollinger
Windhorst's Camby story makes total sense: Knicks can offer non-guaranteed deals in sign and trade, Miami can't.

Marc Berman ‏@NYPost_Berman
Told #Knicks may be fine with sign and trade for Camby and exception for Kidd and keep assets.

If the Rockets want non-guaranteed deals and an asset, we've definitely got the edge. Trading a combination of Gazduric and Jordan would let us start Camby's contract at $3.1M in the first year, while retaining the MMLE to use on Jason Kidd. The Rockets can waive Gadzuric and Jordan, not pay a dime, and we can send them an extra asset (up to $3M cash, or a future 2nd round pick) for their trouble.

Looks like Grunwald's move to waive Billy Walker and sign Dan Gadzuric was not just a basketball move. Gadzuric's non-guranteed contract is giving us an edge in free agency, operating like a second MMLE when you factor in the 150% trade cushion. Very smart cap management by Grunwald.

There is also the Rockets' lack of guard depth to look at as well..........they traded all their PGs and are about to lose out on Lin as well.

The Knicks might as well give the Rockets a "consolation prize" by trading them Toney Douglas as a possible backup PG along with the non-guaranteed contracts of Gadzuric & Jerome Jordan to get Camby back in a S&T.

Gadzuric & Jordan's contracts combined only make up $1.2M-$1.5M, if you add Toney Douglas' $2M contract in that figure it will equal close to the amount of the taxpayer mini-MLE of $3M+...........which is basically the money that Camby is seeking out.

So in other words, that is why the Rockets prefer to do a S&T with the Knicks instead of the Miami Heat

Gadzuric ($1.35M) and Jordan ($750K) total $2.1M, and we can take back 150% of outgoing salary in a sign and trade. That means by just sending out those two, we could start Camby at $3.15M on a new contract, which is right at the taxpayer MLE.

But if Houston is interested in Toney Douglas, by all means, we should make TD a Rocket.

Like I said, Houston literally is lacking guard depth. Even if they manage to get Aaron Brooks back as their starting PG or Felton or Sessions, the Rockets are still gonna need a backup PG and/or backup SG for Kevin Martin. Douglas fills both of those roles, and the Knicks are gonna need more talent that "isn't unprepared."

Douglas has yet to prove himself to be prepared to play on a "contending squad" after he choked it up since the Carmelo trade and all of this season. The Knicks are no longer in that position to wait for Toney Douglas to develop into a contributor, so I don't see the point in keeping him here when he can be used as a trade asset. At least on the rebuilding Rockets team, Toney Douglas will have the room to make mistakes and regain confidence in his game as the team's backup combo guard.

Grunwald should at least "push" this idea to Rockets management
