Are you sold on Toney Douglas as a backup pg?

Postby Trixx on July 29, 2010, 7:12 pm

I like TD a lot, however I don't believe that he's a pg. I'm looking forward to him proving me wrong this season, but if he doesn't we'll have a problem when Felton's not out there. We don't have a true backup...

that said, I wanna gauge how ppl feel about him as our backup. I'm not ready to trade him as of yet b/c I'd like to see what he can offer. He's tough, he's a great defender, his jumpshot has improved, but he's yet to show me that he can fluidly run the offense and set up his teammates...

Does the flow of the game change when he's running the show? Can he run the team? Has his handle improved? Is he going to be a scoring pg as opposed to a facilitator?..etc. :?

your thoughts...

I think he has potential to be the best backup point guard in the NBA.
Jordan Hill was terrible. I can admit that now.

Agreed. And this sounds like sarcasm, but it's not. It could be true. He's got a lethal ass shot and just needs to hone his decisions with the ball and his distribution skills. But he always finishes and has absolutely no fear.

I really like what he brings to the table. He's tougher than leather.

I'm not "sold" on anything other than being excited for the season. All judgments reserved, but I'll be happy going into the season with this roster.

Look at a guy like Derek Fisher. No assist numbers that really jump out at you, considering that he's been a starter on a very high level team, but he's a workhorse on defense and doesn't make too many mistakes on offense.

I think Toney can be just as good if not better.

Let's give the kid a chance. I think him and Ray would make a good tandem.

now that Dudu is gone, I can assees TD without bias. The SL, where he was one of two featured players, was a good place to start.I still like him but i was surprised that he didnt make one beautiful pass all SL. He does everything else very well.

At worst, Toney can shoot and defend at a high level. I'm also confident that he'll improve as a decision maker. That's enough to be a solid backup point guard in this league.
“We’re not sitting here going, ‘Oh, my God, now what are we going to do?’ ” D’Antoni said of losing out on James. “We’ll move on. It’s a little disappointing that you didn’t get him, but we’re really happy with Amar’e, and we think we’ve got some really good kids coming out of this, and we’ll have some flexibility." He added, “It almost energizes you more to get it done.”

TD is a combo guard.... whether he can run the back up remains to be seen, but last season when Duhon left the game, the game flow slowed. As bad as Duhon was, he still got the team passing the ball in a ball rotation.

I think he's better as a backup SG than a backup PG.

I think we'll be alright with him. He's not a starter, but if he's been playing for D'Antoni all this time, I'm sure he'll learn to and get better at picking up the tempo of the game. He's not the flashiest passer, but that's fine, he dosen't turn it over either.
I'm dubius about that

i think TD will be just fine.

however, other than Felton and Douglas, we have nobody else capable of running point. i'd like to see that remedied before the season begins.

Exactly. Can't believe I forgot about his D. It's off the charts. He is as solid as any PG in the defensive category.

He and Felton are gonna be a handful.

I think Toney will have a better season than last year. +1 year of experience in the system, knows his role, and will probably get most of his minutes againt the opponent's 2nd unit.

Considering most responsibilities of an actual PG are not "stressed" on a backup PG........I'm fine with Toney as a backup PG. However, if a better option comes out way to take the backup PG role (such as Shannon Brown), then I'm fine with trading Toney for that better backup
The Mike D'Antoni system = We live and die by the PG, the team is only as good as the talent of the PG

yes I am sold on TD.

Gallo is first, but then TD comes togehter with Amare as my favorite Knicks right now.

somehow he reminisces me of the 90's pgs harper, ward and childs.

I really like TD, but I think the major issue is which combination of guards make up a good backcourt combo?

TD together with Azubuike or Chandler makes sense to me.

TD and Felton? Well I am not saying it wont work, just saying I am dubious about it. And if TD is going to have a significant role on our roster, I guess that combination needs to work.

I am sold on TD as a backup PG, but if he's the trading chip necessary to complete a deal that would upgrade us at SG, then I'd have to go with it; you build the strongest starting lineup first, then figure out how to provide depth.

I'd be fine with a FA vet like Earl Watson or Rafe Alston as a backup PG for the minimum.

I was almost sold on him being a starting pg if our top talent was more of a playmaker (lebron, wade,Johnson). But now that most of our talents are of the finishing type that need a pure facilitator we have to expect more from Doiglas in the passing dept. It all depended on who we got. But as a backup I think he's just fine. He'll slowly learn how to be a better pg but as said it always helps when you play great defense to forgive certain shortcomings. Tony could be one of the best defensive guards in the league. Last season when he got playing time he was a game changer on that end. It just doesnt have as huge an impact when you're the only one doing it. This year we got more defenders so I think tony can be a leader on defense even from the bench
