Knicks make offer to Lakers' Brown
Posted on: July 29, 2010 3:36 pm

The Knicks have extended an offer to Shannon Brown and are waiting to hear whether the Lakers' free-agent guard will take it or wait for L.A. to make room to re-sign him by trading Sasha Vujacic, two people with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com Thursday.

Brown, 24, played all 82 games for the champion Lakers last season and is weighing whether to join Ray Felton in the Knicks' revamped backcourt or give the Lakers time to clear the room needed to re-sign him. The Lakers didn't give all of their mid-level exception to point guard Steve Blake, so some of it is left for Brown. But that's not really the issue. The Lakers, as usual, are well into the luxury tax. So moving Vujacic's $5.4 million salary for next season would ease the tax hit associated with keeping Brown.

Brown's electrifying transition game would be a huge asset in coach Mike D'Antoni's up-tempo system, and Brown would have a good chance of winning a starting job after starting only seven games for the Lakers last season.

He played decent minutes on a two-time championship team. I dont think much of him as a player, but if he can get minutes on the Lakers, he's good enough to be in the rotation here.

Where exactly would Brown start??

he's alright. very athletic, strong finisher, decent defender.

he also had some pretty good numbers in his few starts last year.

not a bad option, if the signing goes through. but it begs the question -- are we gearing up for a trade?

24 years old, great athlete, good defender, but he only shot 33% from three last season.

The Knicks only have ~$2.5M of cap space left, so the offer is probably something like 2yr/$5M or 3yr/$8M. Brown would be a good value signing at those type of numbers, but I'm not sure I like what this would mean for for Toney Douglas.

Would be a good pick up, very athletic and has experience playing on quality lakers team where he played well in his minutes. Wonder if that would eliminate their interest in Fernandez.

Baffling move by Team Walsh..Brown is a 2 guard who cant shoot but is super athletic...I dont get it unless Dantoni feels Walker,Azubuckie and Chandler are not 2 guard material..

Smells like a trade coming up..Cant see Brown comiing to NY to ride the pine as he got 20 mpg in LA

Aqcquisition or not the fact that the knicks are attempting to offer Brown something gives me confidence that upper management knows what they're doing.....major points in my book....he's shown improvement every year and developed a deadly range...Brown would thrive in D'Antoni's system and is taylor made for it (imo).

Good move if he signs! But lets still try to get Rudy Fernandez and include Toney Douglas b/c he just came expendable. That three guard lineup of Felton, Fernandez, Brown is sick! Also I don't like Shannon as the starting guard, I like him playing the 6 man role like Jamal Crawford!

I LOVE Shannon Brown, and would like him here... But imo, he doesn't address a true need at this point. We have 1 roster spot remaining, i'd like to give it to a shooter/facilitator...

he's a combo guard who can't shoot.
that being said, he's a fantastic dunker and i want to see him sky in a knicks jersey.

Starters: Felton, Brown, Gallo, STAT, Turiaf

Bench: Chandler, Randolph, Douglas, Az

What is there not to like about this line-up; this rotation :?

How I see it, Donnie Walsh keeps finding ways in making this team better. Hopefully Shannon Brown signs on because this guy came from the bottom; and fought his way into the Lakers rotation. Gotta respect that :hammer:

Shannon IMO is what you would call a complete basketball player. He has all the tools, plays defense from the passing lanes; to locking down his own man. Shannon also has a decent jumpshot from the 3 pointer, to his mid-range pull up.

So like I state it earlier, hopefully dude signs that dotted line

actually we have 14 players including all 3 2nd rd picks.

so that last spot would go to brown.

hope throwing all this cash around on guys like Mozgov and Brown won't result in Donnie coming up a couple bucks short when it's time to make a legitimate offer to Carmelo (if he doesn't sign an extension with the Nuggets prior to that, obviously). now, I realize that a discrepancy of two-three million may not look like that big a deal, but unless we got all the max cash our chances get severely diminished.

IIRC, only Mozgov's first season is fully guaranteed and we don't even know yet if Brown would be getting more than a 1 year deal.

as things stand right now, we have $46.2 million in contracts on the books for next summer.

however, $15.4 million are Team Options: Gallo (4.2), Mozgov (3.2), Chandler (3.1), Randolph (2.9), Douglas (1.1) and Walker (900k).

the only fully guaranteed contracts in the books are Amare, Felton and Turiaf, for a total of $30.8 million, and Turiaf could still opt out.
